75 Years of Geotech at JFK Airport

ASCE NJB Geotechnical Technical Group (GTG) Presents:

“From Wetlands to Wings and a River Ran Through It…
75 Years of Geotechnical History at JFK International Airport”

Presented by John S. Horvath, Ph.D., PE

The 75-year existence of the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City provides a unique case history illustrating the technological evolution of geotechnical and foundation engineering in general and tapered driven piles. Achievable pile capacities have increased by a factor of 10 as the slide-rule age gave way to the age of the digital computer and related microprocessor technology.

The lessons learned at JFKIA are wide-ranging with applications well beyond the airport and are thus of interest to all geotechnical and foundation engineers as well as material suppliers and construction contractors. The most significant current trend in geotechnology is the migration from traditional strength-based design of deep-foundation capacity to one that is stiffness and displacement-based using results from the seismic piezocone.

Registration and Reception from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM
